State of Pennsylvania Department of Revenue Entrepreneurship Series - Start-Ups

During this course, various Department of Revenue experts will discuss current tax topics impacting newly created firms.

Module 1: Pennsylvania Taxes for New Businesses

Running your own business can be rewarding though there are rules, laws, and procedures to follow.  This course will help you to understand Pennsylvania Taxes for New Businesses.

We have found that most tax delinquencies often stem from misunderstanding Pennsylvania laws and procedures. So, we designed this course for new businesses to raise awareness about some common errors thus saving your business time and money.  We will discuss income tax, employer withholding tax, sales and use tax, and exemption certificates. In addition, you will learn some guaranteed tips for success and your rights as a Pennsylvania taxpayer.

Module 2: Sales Tax Basics

Your business is set up and ready to go.  Before you make those first sales, you need to have a basic knowledge of Pennsylvania sales tax:  Who needs to be registered to collect? What items are taxable? When does  sales tax need to be charged? Where do I file and pay? How do I keep proper records? You will also learn about exemptions, use tax, and resources to help you  every step of the way as your business grows.

Module 3: Exemption Certificates

To quote Ben Franklin, “….in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”  Not so, Ben. There are times when businesses may not need to pay certain PA taxes. This course will review the Pennsylvania exemption certificate, when to use it, how to use it, what qualifies for an exemption, and how to maintain your tax exemptions records.

Module 4: Recordkeeping for Business Taxes

Whether it be paper, software, or a combination of both, business records and recordkeeping are an important aspect of any business. In this course, we focus on the best practices as they relate to Pennsylvania tax records with the goal of helping your business maintain compliance with the tax law.

We will explore general recordkeeping requirements and specific requirements for your sales and business expenses, and for those of your employees.  You will learn not only the value of good recordkeeping but also the positive impact it will have on your income tax return.

The intent of this course is to set up your business up for success. When it’s time to file, you will have all the information you need to complete your tax returns and get back to running your business.
