Neuroscience for Business

Looking for ways to hack your brain to become more productive? Are you a manager who is looking for ways to connect and motivate others to succeed?

In the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in our understanding of the human brain, how it functions and learns. Many of the older ideas and strategies around learning and memory have been shown to be incorrect and recent findings paint a very different picture of the human brain and its capacity for productivity, innovation and creativity. We have the opportunity to learn and adapt our practices to incorporate many of these findings into new strategies. This course will cover many of the recent findings and discuss the new concepts and ideas around the neuroscience in a relevant and practical manner.

To give an example, our modern lifestyles and constantly evolving technology play havoc with our habits and routines. Habitual behaviour is an adaptive mechanism that evolved to allow us to concentrate on other things. Think about all the things you do every day without concentrating on them – making coffee/tea, driving to work, showering, brushing teeth, checking your email, the list is endless. But now, many devices are designed hack into your normal habitual behaviour...and the effects are widespread - on your productivity, resilience, curiosity, creativity, innovation and mental health. How and why our brains create habits is fascinating, and understanding this provides simple ways you can change your habits to become more productive both at home and at work.

In this course, participants will learn about the recent findings in neuroscience, including about habits, and how they can be adapted in your business including:

  • The importance of understanding neuroplasticity and how the brain works
  • How memories are formed and their role in innovation
  • Attention and its vital role in communication, collaboration and productivity
  • The importance of connection and creating an in-group
  • The neuroscience of habits and how to create better ones
  • How modern lifestyle and technology affects our productivity
  • How to get your time and productivity back

Presenter:

Mark Williams is an Internationally recognised Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience who has worked at top Universities in Australia and overseas including MIT in the USA. He has been published in top tier international academic journals and been widely featured in the media including the ABC, SkyNews, SBS, The Guardian, New York Times, The Economist and the New Scientist.  Not a typical ‘academic’, Mark comes from a disjointed family background. He hated school and experienced first-hand the challenges of getting ahead in a small town in Victoria. To describe these years as ‘colourful’ is an understatement.

Aged 25, something changed. Mark returned to learning, completed his HSC and began what became a rapid rise to academic achievement, including being awarded both the CJ Martin and the Queen Elisabeth II Fellowships. He became fascinated with how we interact, learn and think. Mark went on to study brain plasticity, attention disorders, autism, prosopagnosia (face blindness), dementia and eating disorders. He has been at the cutting edge of developing computational brain imaging analysis and the adoption of new technologies like virtual reality in research.

He designed and convenes a very successful 1st Year Neuroscience course at University with more than 800 students and works with schools on improving teaching methods, learning outcomes, and student welbeing. His focus is on scientifically proven methods of learning and teaching rather than trends and popular opinions.
