Strategy in a Global Context

This program examines how organizations expand, compete, and create value across international markets. Participants explore the globalization of production and trade, learning how differences in culture, administration, geography, and economics influence strategic choices through frameworks such as the CAGE Distance Model and Porter’s Diamond of National Advantage. The program introduces key modes of market entry, ranging from exporting and licensing to joint ventures and acquisitions, and helps participants evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, and strategic fit of each approach. Emphasis is placed on optimizing the global value chain to leverage cost economies, exploit regional strengths, and balance standardization with local adaptation. Participants also analyze transnational strategies, global alliances, and risk management techniques, gaining practical insight into exchange rate exposure, political instability, and hedging approaches. By the end of the program, participants will understand how to craft and assess global strategies that align with organizational goals, mitigate risks, and enhance competitiveness across diverse markets.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the key drivers of globalization and major modes of foreign market entry.
  • Explain how cultural, political, geographic, and economic factors shape international strategy and value creation.
  • Use frameworks such as CAGE and Porter’s Diamond to evaluate country-level advantages and strategic positioning.
  • Compare market entry strategies and assess how global value chain optimization enhances cost efficiency and differentiation.
  • Assess trade-offs among standardization, localization, and transnational approaches to balance efficiency and market responsiveness.
  • Design a global strategic plan that integrates market entry, alliance formation, and risk mitigation to achieve sustainable international success.
